The FV4030/4 Challenger 1 is a British main battle tank (MBT) used by the British Army from 1983 to 2001, when it was superseded by the Challenger 2. First entering service in the early 1980s, the Challenger 1 was a crucial asset for NATO’s armored strategy during the latter stages of the Cold War. With its innovative Chobham armor and 120mm rifled gun, it set a new standard in tank design and survivability for the British Army.
